Houston: 5 dogs
Start Date:  April 2011
Rescue Coordinator:

September 2011

Two of the four dogs rescued from this situation have been adopted. Ziggy and her family live in Florida half the year and in Arkansas the rest of the time. She is really living the good life. Freddie Mac found a wonderful home after finishing heartworm treatment. Polly aka Precious has had some issues adjusting to a new home she was adopted to, so we are moving her back into foster care so that we can help her become more confident and less clingy. Rocky has not been posted on the website as he is still receiving heartworm treatment.

Volunteers are checking to ensure that the one remaining dog in the situation, Bear, is being cared for properly.

April 2011

While traveling through Houston, AR, an OOTW Independent Rescuer happened across five hungry dogs in the road. Three of the four small dogs were horribly emaciated. Upon inspection she found out that the dogs lived in a nearby trailer. The lady of the house had thinning hair and a trach from Stage 4 throat cancer, she stated the dogs used to live in the house but her husband had kicked them out when she got sick. The lady said "we have some food for them up here" and tossed out about a quarter of a loaf of stale bread which the biggest dog gobbled up before the little ones could get any.

The lady seemed to welcome help with the dogs, she stated that there were other dogs that had been run over and we suspect others have starved. Even though she has a husband and a 20+ year old son that appears to live with her, they offer no assistance at all, not even putting out food or water. She agreed to let OOTW take the dogs as long as we "can get them good homes."

The dogs wouldn't let the rescuer pick them up and the lady couldn't lift anything so OOTW arranged for the dogs to be fed until foster homes and medical assistance could be arranged.

Within the week OOTW was able to get the four little dogs to the vet, they were spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed. Luckily only two of the dogs have heartworm disease and now all 4 dogs are on the way to recovery. We will attempt to get Bear at a later date.

Ziggy aka Perty Pup - is a Meer-cat, she can jump very high and would be amazing at agility. She is like a one year old busy, busy, busy playing and is great at fetch, she is obsessed with balls! Ziggy is like velcro and will go to anyone that will sit and hold her all day or throw her a ball.

Fred aka Troscoe - He is doing well, is fairly calm and is so comfortable at his foster home that he sleeps on his back. He is weary of females but just loves men. He is warming up nicely.

Polly aka Precious - is doing fine. She looks normal now. She loves to be in your lap or under the covers. She is scared of loud noises, but not particularly of men. It's seems to be difficult to get her to be outside, she's probably just scared. But considering everything she's doing very well and ready to make someone a wonderful companion.

Rocky is doing great! He was initially frightened and defensive but now you can pick him up and carry him around and even snuggle cheek to cheek, he is very affectionate and sweet. At some point he was hit by a car. Poor little fella, from the looks of him he got picked on the most by Bear, the biggest dog, he's just covered with scars. Rocky is looking/feeling/acting better every day, but he is terrified of men! Overall we're really impressed with his transformation.
